My Son is a officially a Husker!
Posted June 16, 2009 by kim in Announcements, Random Thoughts

In all of our household busyness, my son (as seen above with dear ole me) graduated from high school last month and has already moved to Omaha for the summer to work. But we met to go to Lincoln together last week for New Student Orientation at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. It was an all day affair 7:30 - 5, which I think could have been shortened to half a day if they cut out some of the skits, shortened some presentations and offered tours a la carte (as we’d previously had the same tour on a campus visit). But it was informative for both of us nonetheless. My son is super excited to start attending, and he is all registered for classes to start this fall. My guess is that his favorite part of college will be the student tickets to the football games and the all-you-can-eat cafeteria buffets (yes, it’s that much better than my cooking). And the best part of the day for me was when they thought I was one of the students and not a parent! I thought it was a compliment even though they apologized for the error. Overall the experience made me wish I personally had attended UNL in my former life to be able to call myself a true “Husker” instead of just a Husker fan.

It’s A Smoke-Free Nebraska!
Posted June 1, 2009 by kim in Announcements, Husker News, Random Thoughts
Yesterday was World No Tobacco Day, and today Nebraska’s Clean Indoor Air Act goes into effect! The law bans smoking in all public places and businesses except cigar bars and 20% of hotel rooms. Yippee! Can you tell I’m a non-smoker? Sure the smokers are upset - I say it’s a good time for everyone to quit!
I posted on my Facebook page (are you my friend yet?) how excited I was for this day to come. Got some good commentary/feedback…
Kim: can’t wait until June 1st when Nebraska bars/restaurants will be smoke-free.
Mookie: Think of all the water people will save — no more post-bar showers to loufa the smoke off.
Christina: And there will be much rejoicing.
Amy: except for all the post- bar showers to loufa all the booze and sweat off!
Brent: They did that in Boston a bunch of years ago. It was the best thing that they could have done. No more going home stinking of cigarette smoke, and you can actually breath in the bar now.
Mookie: I don’t know Amy, I kinda like the booze-and-sweat combo. Sort of like a “marinade”.
Jay: But this may cause more people to quit smoking. Cigarette tax just went up by about a buck-and-a-half! Who’s gonna pay for the Economic Stimulus Package? Who’s gonna send all those bankers to Jamaica? Poor bankers.
Jay: I have an idea! Nebraska just implemented a new death penalty. Well, if second-hand smoke kills you, how about we put condemned criminals in little cages in bars, and let people smoke near them? Kill the convict, and entertainment for everyone, at no extra cost to the taxpayer! Jay for Governor!
Amy: LOL- Ewww!!! Marinade. Yuck. I’ll pass on being a sirloin thanks!
Jay: Plus all those unemployed loufas.
Amy: Poor loufas!
Kim: Wow, I finally go to take a shower for the day (yes I’ve been slacking off) so I can go out and get all smoky again tonight and come back to all these comments - you guys are too funny.
Dustie: dont like it… dont go!!!
Amy C: Emporia KS bars/restaurants went smoke-free a couple months ago….it is great!!!
Bonnie: Been smoke free here in MA for years, not too bad
What are your thoughts? Do you think smoking should be banned in all public places across the USA? Give your Opinion and you could win $400!

Shane Osborn’s Wife Alleges Physical Abuse
Posted May 26, 2009 by kim in Husker News
Just heard on WOWT - Terry Osborn, wife of Shane Osborn, is alleging she’s been physically abused by Shane since they married in 2003. According court documents, nine days after Terry Osborn filed for divorce, she filed for a protection order saying she’s been the victim of physical and emotional abuse. Shane’s publicist said he is taking the higher road with no comment. And did they just say she’s already moved in with an old boyfriend? Hmmmm.
Shane Osborn, originally from Norfolk, Nebraska, gained recognition (along with heightening his arrogant ego) by being in the limelight when he was piloting the airplane in the Hainan Island incident. Shane is now Nebraska’s State Treasurer. Oh, and you may be owed money by the State of Nebraska - Search for Unclaimed Property. Damn, no moolah for me.

Nebraska No Longer Pwned
Posted May 26, 2009 by kim in Husker News
Nebraska Motor Vehicles Director Beverly Neth now admits that the winning votes of the new Nebraska license plate were indeed hijacked. Investigation took place after the media asked for a review of the raw data of the survey. Turns out that CollegeHumor.com did the skew the results to make the black/white/red design the winner. After disqualifying the humor site votes, a new winner was announced - the even uglier meadowlark/goldenrod design won. The soap opera saga was fun while it lasted.

Nebraska Gets Pwned
Posted May 20, 2009 by kim in Husker News, Random Thoughts
Yesterday, Gov. Dave Heineman unveiled the new license plates for the State of Nebraska…

Submissions were voted on, but were the votes hijacked? Kevin Corrigan of CollegeHumor.com had posted a Ruin a Poll to get people to vote for the boring gray design, and that particular design won!
This isn’t a victory for Collegehumor. This is a victory for all of us. Together we pranked the entire automobile-owning population of Nebraska. Congratulations.
94 Rock Radio had Kevin as a guest on their Morning Rockpile this morning who kept website statistics showing that they did indeed send 14,000 of those votes. Without those votes, this particular design would not have won. Does this justify a recount?
Personally, I didn’t like any of the choices. Guess I should have stepped up the plate and submitted my own design then. After all, I did originally major in commercial art in college.
