National Championship Thoughts
Well the big day is finally here and I should have wrote this post sooner* rather than later. You may ask why the asterisk(*) on sooner and let me remind you of the Conan O’Brien skit “In the year 2000.” Back in the year 2000 there was a blue blood football program looking to make it’s comeback to the college football scene: The Oklahoma Sooners*. Back at the beginning of the new millennium the scrappy sooner squad was given no respect in return to national prominence but some how mustered their way to an undefeated season and a trip to the national title. I will start by saying that the 2000 Oklahoma Sooners and the 2012 Notre Dame Fighting Irish have very similar traits.
Both the Sooner and Irish programs were blue blood college football programs looking to make their return to the top. Both teams features star linebackers that were the face of their team – Rocky Calmus for the Sooners and Manti Te’o for the Irish. Both teams earned their stripes by playing rather difficult schedules and will face a team that is heavily favored, both have one loss and fresh off a national championship – the 2012 Alabama Crimson Tide (12-1) and the 2000 Florida State Seminoles (11-1). If history repeats itself, Notre Dame should follow in Oklahoma’s footsteps and win the national title tonight and return to glory. That being said, I hope Nebraska is the next blue blood program to make it’s return for the top but for now the Irish deserve the credit as they enter the spot light for the crystal ball.
Prediction time: I don’t want to be the guy that picks the the same score as the 2001 Orange Bowl with a 13 – 2 Sooner victory, but the 2013 BCS title game will be the same type of battle that took place 12 years ago. Notre Dame 16 – Alabama 13
