Martinez Eyes Indy
If you told me four years ago today that Taylor Martinez would run the show to the big red scoring explosion, I would have laughed. I admitted around mid-season of 2011 that “T-Magic” is in fact the real deal. Martinez game has made tremendous strides with the help of offensive coordinator Tim Beck and his little minion Joe Ganz. Beck has developed a scheme that tricks your average arm-chair quarterback into thinking the huskers are running the same play 80% of the time. Yes, I know not ALL husker fans are especially “football smart” but the big red runs a multitude of running plays out of the shotgun and most fans just cannot seem to grasp the “big picture.”
Martinez thrives off the big play that is set up through the husker offensive lineman who deliver crushing trap and pulls on the opposing Defensive Ends that are assigned to contain “T-Magic.” The zone read is the base play that sets everything into motion and has defensive players cheating on where the ball is supposed to go. This all changes when the big red calls a trap play on the DE and T-Magic gallops another 70 yards for a touchdown. The plays look very similar to the average football viewer but the play is designed for Martinez to keep the ball and have the formerly unblocked read End think he has an easy shot on Taylor but instead has a nice 300 pound pulling guard spoiling his lucky day.
For now Martinez eyes the shot at a Big Ten Championship but faces an inspired Penn State this Saturday. I plead to all husker fans to not give up on the T-Magic for any negative play early in the game. If the husker fans could see the true drive and determination that Taylor Martinez possesses there could be a very special year for the huskers in 2013…
