Nebrasketball
I am gonna take a quick break on my beloved husker football and discuss husker hoops. First off, my knowledge of the X’s and O’s of basketball is very minimal and I will need to consult my sources before making accusations on the play of the husker basketball program. The Tim Miles hire is a home run hire for the personality needed to run the broken big red basketball machine. Last year I enjoyed watching former Nebraska high school legends: Jesse Carr, Wes Eikmeier, Greg Smith, and Dwight Smith; all contribute to Tim Miles’s “Big Dance” worthy Colorado State team. Label me if you want for wanting more Nebraska prep players on the husker round ball roster but this program needs a foundation to start.
Nebrasketball the past ten years has seen only mercenary type squads with no stability or commitment. Football is king and basketball will never be the top priority but the Nebraska teams that are composed of transfers from other schools, JUCOs, and a few white basketball players from Beatrice will not win on a consistent basis. Before you attack my logic about how I only want a Nebraska prep roster for the future of husker basketball, all I say is that we need to slowly build the Nebraska brand by locking up the top Nebraska prep players to use as the foundation of the rebuilding process. It may take two or three years to achieve good results but the foundation of Nebraska high school players actually care and give all of their abilities to represent the state of Nebraska. From my experiences with the mercenary transfer and JUCO players on campus in the classroom, it is clear they could care less about the state of Nebraska and UNL in general. The mercenaries players are only here for aspirations of big money in the European basketball league or NBA and many do not finish their degrees after their basketball career at UNL.
Tim Miles is taking the approach of getting the foundation of Nebraska prep players and slowly sprinkling top prep talent from across the nation to form his ideal team. I believe this formula will have success but there will be growing pains that accompany this transition. Nebrasketball is in the right hands at the moment and I will see architect Tim Miles coach in person for the first time this Thursday versus Valparaiso.
